About Nicole:

My name’s Nicole and I live in West Michigan with my husband and high school sweetheart Kenny and our two kids Sadie (10) and Gavin (9). I went to college for math and accounting and worked in accounting for a couple years after college, but after having our second child, I decided to stay home full time. We started homeschooling in 2019. 

Since the beginning of our marriage, we’ve always had the goal to be debt free and financially independent in our early 30s (now the goal is by 40). I think that is part of our personality but also going to college during the recession and working for a company that went bankrupt has shaped our financial goals. We paid our first house off within a couple years of marriage, but then the American creep set in and we bought two more houses. So the goal posts have been moved back a bit but we still hope to achieve our goal by the time we turn 40. With that goal, my job recently hasn’t been to make money, it has always been to save money. I’ve done that with thrifting, raising food, fixing things ourselves, we burn wood for heat, making our own food, etc. And I was quite content with how things were going.

But something changed in January 2022. I wanted to make money. I’m not sure where that desire came from but it was there. I randomly picked up the book “Everyone Should Be Millionaires” from the library. Although I don’t even agree with the title, she had some practical exercises to find an avenue to make money. I started brainstorming what skills I had and then different ways to make money with those skills. The conclusion I came to was that I could sell homeschool material and my avenue would be Etsy. 

I met with a good friend at the beginning of March 2022 and she told me all she knew about Etsy and shared all her listing templates with me. She had been selling for a year at that point, and was doing well. She now has 22k sales. It was an immense help. I officially started my shop March 17, 2022, and had my first sale on March 24.

Since starting the shop, we bought a rental house on a lake in 2023 and have been renting that out on Airbnb. We’ve raised animals, had a CSA, started visiting National Parks and camping more and we’ve continued to homeschool.
