About Emily:

Emily Bowser is the designer behind Magill, a San Diego-based clothing brand that creates custom, vintage-inspired sweatshirts. After falling in love with sewing in high school, Emily pursued her passion at Cornell University, earning a degree in Fashion Design, and after graduating began her career at URBN INC., where she designed clothing for BHLDN, Urban Outfitters, and Anthropologie. After several years in the design world, Emily went on to earn her MBA at Georgetown University and transitioned into marketing and customer strategy, blending her creative background with business expertise.

In 2018, after relocating to California, Emily launched Magill as a creative outlet that reflected her personal aesthetic and love of vintage style and design. Drawn to the craftsmanship and individuality of vintage sweatshirts and athletic wear, she became inspired by the hand-finished details and heirloom quality of garments from the past. This passion continues to inform her work today, as she thoughtfully merges timeless design with modern sensibilities through her brand Magill.

EPISODE SUMMARY:

In this episode of "How to Sell Your Stuff on Etsy," I'm thrilled to welcome Emily Bowser, the creative mind behind the San Diego-based clothing brand Magill. Emily's journey into the world of handmade products is both inspiring and insightful, making this conversation a must-listen for anyone interested in the Etsy marketplace.

We kick off the episode by discussing my passion for helping people connect with their calling and the tools they need to overcome obstacles in their entrepreneurial journey. I share my excitement about a new tool called Etsy Radar from ProfitTree, which is designed to help sellers make data-informed decisions and scale their businesses effectively. I emphasize the importance of understanding your numbers, especially when it comes to running ads on Etsy, and how this tool can simplify that process.

As we dive into Emily's story, she shares her background in fashion design, having earned her degree from Cornell University and worked for major brands like Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters. After relocating to California, she launched Magill as a creative outlet that reflects her love for vintage-inspired clothing. Emily's unique approach to embroidery and her focus on high-quality, handcrafted products have led to impressive sales on Etsy, and she candidly discusses the challenges and learning curves she faced along the way.

Throughout our conversation, we explore the importance of delegating tasks and building a support system as a small business owner. Emily reveals how she manages her time between her Etsy shop, a Shopify store, a FAIR shop, and her full-time corporate job, all while raising three kids. She emphasizes the value of investing in her team and the significance of maintaining quality in her production process.

We also touch on the evolving landscape of handmade products in the face of increasing digital competition. Emily shares her thoughts on the future of handmade goods and how they can provide a safeguard against the rise of AI in the marketplace. She highlights the importance of creating unique experiences for customers and the potential for handmade products to thrive in this changing environment.

Finally, we discuss Emily's approach to SEO and marketing, where she shares her insights on what has worked for her in terms of driving traffic and maintaining sales.
